Job summary

Maricopa County is seeking a Roadway Technician to join the Transportation team. You will operate county equipment to construct and maintain roads and related structures, and install and maintain traffic control for construction zones in line with MUTCD.

The role requires attention to safety, ability to work in varied weather, and readiness for on-call duties during emergencies. It offers competitive pay, overtime eligibility, and a comprehensive benefits package including tuition reimbursement

Qualifications

  • One year of experience in traffic control, or two years in maintenance, repair, or construction of roads.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.
  • ATSSA Flagging certification within six months of hire.
  • Experience in the public sector is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain traffic control signing and barricading during emergencies and floods.
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain traffic control devices for lane/road closures, detours, bypasses, and shoulder work.
  • Inspect barricades, lights, signs, sandbags, and sign spacing for proper setup.
  • Create work orders and tasks, complete daily reports, and document inspections in Cartegraph.
  • Operate trucks, equipment, and tools following safety regulations; perform related duties as assigned.

Prepare, clean, and maintain traffic control devices for lane/road closures, detours, bypasses, and shoulder work in County work zones following Federal, State, and County traffic control plansInspect barricades, lights, signs, sandbags, and sign spacing daily to ensure proper traffic control set-ups. Provide flagging for work zones, including the use of STOP/SLOW paddles or handheld radiosCreate work orders and tasks, complete daily written reports, enter information into the asset management system (Cartegraph), and document pre- and post-trip inspections for all assigned equipmentParticipate in special projects, emergencies, Palo Verde drills/exercises, and flooded roadway response; be on call/standby 24 hours for emergency requests. Install and program message boards and speed monitors for special events throughout Maricopa County, as neededInstall and maintain traffic control signing, and barricading during emergencies and floodsPerform manual labor assignments and load/unload materials, supplies, and equipment, and deliver to job sites as directedAssist in building, repairing, maintaining, clearing brush and debris, and landscaping of roadways and roadway structures such as pavement, culverts, headwalls, fences, and guardrailsOperate a variety of trucks, power equipment, and manual tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures, including sandbagger, forklift, skip loader, etc.Perform other duties as assigned; some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shiftWorking ConditionsExerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantlyExerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or up to 20 - 50 pounds constantlyIncumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibrationIncumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travelThe work will occur in an office and field environment.
