Job summary

Maricopa County Department of Transportation seeks an Operations and Maintenance Supervisor for the Roadway Maintenance Division. You will lead about 20 staff, direct daily activities, and coordinate crews and heavy equipment to maintain safety and extend asset life.

You will interact with residents and agencies, respond to emergencies, and ensure work complies with MUTCD and MCDOT policies. A CDL and state certifications are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in road construction, road maintenance, and/or road repair programs and projects.
  • Seven years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or road repair programs and projects.
  • Three years of supervisor and management experience in road construction or road maintenance.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license by time of hire.
  • IMSA Signs and Markings I & II and ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor certifications.
  • Asset management experience.
  • Class A CDL driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the daily activities of staff and coordinate vehicles and equipment.
  • Review work for quality and timely completion and maintain asset records.
  • Prepare reports on utilization, progress, and budgets as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns from the public and agencies within timelines.
  • Prepare budget requests and monitor expenditures within approved budgets.
  • Dispatch and account for crew activity during emergencies.
  • Ensure compliance with MUTCD and MCDOT safety policies.

About the Position

The Operations and Maintenance Supervisor for the Roadway Maintenance Division is responsible for directing the daily activities of an average of 20 employees, including a Field Supervisor, Crew Leaders, Heavy Equipment Operators, Equipment Operators, Striping Technicians, and Roadway Technicians. This position is an opportunity to use your skills, training, and strengths to lead a team that responds to customer concerns and performs scheduled maintenance for the safety of the traveling public. You will feel a sense of accomplishment by directly serving residents’ needs through supervising a team of roadway specialists, managing emergency situations, and monitoring progress towards goals and objectives to meet the department’s priorities. Your work will directly impact the citizens of Maricopa County by solving problems, mitigating issues, and finding solutions to extend the life of our transportation assets. You will have direct interaction with internal and external customers, including employees, residents, and other agencies.

Requirements
  • We Require Five years of experience in road construction, road maintenance, and/or road repair programs and projects
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Other Requirements Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.
  • We Also Value Associate’s degree
  • Seven years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or road repair programs and projects
  • Three years of supervisor and management experience in road construction or road maintenance

Job Contributions
  • Direct the daily activities of assigned staff, coordinate and schedule staff, vehicles, and equipment such as mobile grader, up to 6500-gal water truck, dump truck, street sweeper, loader, striping truck, short-line stripers, and other various pieces of heavy equipment and vehicles ranging from light duty to heavy duty Review the work of assigned staff to ensure quality and timely completion of assigned duties and responsibilities, and maintain accurate records in the MCDOT asset management system.
  • Prepare reports on utilization, progress, and other areas as needed Respond to inquiries, complaints, and concerns from the general public and various governmental agencies within standard timelines to provide updates, answer questions, and discuss solutions
  • Prepare cost estimates for budget recommendation, preparation, and projections.
  • Prepare budget requests and monitor and control expenditures within approval budget limits
  • Travel to various locations to conduct and participate in field visits, meetings, and coordination with staff
  • Work with employees to correct performance deficiencies; counsel and implement discipline procedures as needed
  • Ensure all tasks are completed within financial guidelines and in compliance with all operational, traffic control (MUTCD), safety rules and regulations, and MCDOT policies, procedures, and standards
  • Identify and coordinate in-house training, mentorship, and safety programs
  • Dispatch and account for crew activity during emergency events
  • Other job duties as assigned
Work Conditions

Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
