Job description

Roadway Maintenance Technician
Help Keep Roads Safe for the Traveling Public

Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc. (Jorgensen) has been a leader in highway infrastructure maintenance and operations for more than 65 years. Our teams work every day to keep highways, bridges, roadways, drainage systems, signs, guardrails, and roadside assets safe and operational.

We are currently seeking full-time Roadway Maintenance Technicians to join our roadway maintenance team. This is a hands-on position for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, operating equipment, solving problems, and contributing directly to public safety.

What You'll Actually Do

No two days are exactly the same. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you'll work as part of a crew performing roadway maintenance and emergency response activities on active highways and roadways.

Typical duties include:

  • Picking up debris, litter, and roadway hazards that could impact driver safety
  • Installing, repairing, and replacing guardrail, signs, delineators, and other roadway safety devices
  • Repairing potholes and pavement damage using asphalt and concrete materials
  • Cleaning ditches, culverts, storm drains, and drainage systems to prevent flooding
  • Removing damaged roadway infrastructure following vehicle impacts
  • Mowing, trimming vegetation, clearing brush, and maintaining highway rights-of-way
  • Setting up traffic control devices, cones, signs, and lane closures to protect work zones
  • Responding to vehicle accidents, severe weather, flooding, and other roadway emergencies
  • Assisting with snow and ice removal operations, including plowing, spreading salt, and clearing ice during winter weather events
  • Loading, unloading, and transporting materials, tools, and equipment
  • Performing inspections and basic maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Using smartphones and company applications to document completed work, report roadway conditions, and receive assignments

This position regularly works alongside live traffic and requires strict adherence to safety procedures and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) requirements.

What to Expect

This is not a warehouse or shop position. Successful candidates are comfortable:

  • Working outdoors year-round in heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity, and changing weather conditions
  • Performing physically demanding work throughout the day
  • Standing, walking, climbing, digging, lifting, carrying, and using hand tools
  • Working near moving traffic and construction equipment
  • Responding to emergency callouts when roadway conditions require immediate action
  • Working occasional nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts during storms or emergency events
  • Being part of an on-call rotation

Highway maintenance is essential work that keeps roads safe and open for the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
