Job description

General Transportation Tech I

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

General Transportation Tech II

Includes all essential duties listed for General Transportation Tech I as well as:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, largedragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech I

Education: No education required.

Experience: No experience required(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver

General Transportation Tech II

Education: No education required.

Experience:1 year experiencein transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

    • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Some knowledge of:
    • Plan review methods, processes and procedures
  • Proficient skill in:
    • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
    • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
    • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
    • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
    • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

General Transportation Engineer I and II

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

  • Employees in this role will be required to respond to weather-related emergencies, including but not limited to hurricanes, snow/ice events, and flooding.
  • Participation in a rotating on-call schedule is mandatory.
  • When notified, the employee must report for duty within 45 minutes, regardless of the time of day, to assist in emergency response operations. This requirement is in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
