Job summary

CDOT in Colorado is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Salida/Poncha Springs. You will join a team responsible for keeping roadways safe and passable through winter plowing, debris removal, and routine maintenance.

The role requires two years of physical labor or heavy equipment experience, operates equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, and backhoes, and offers a base pay with a housing stipend, overtime, and a 4-day summer schedule.

Qualifications

• At least two (2) years of physical labor or heavy equipment operation experience.
• Strong commitment to working safely.
• Willing to learn and adapt to changing conditions.
• Works effectively in a team environment and communicates well in safety-critical situations.
• Experience operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers and backhoes.
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software/equipment.
• State service experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Plowing snow.
• Operating heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower).
• Mowing grass and weeds.
• Removing debris from roadways (rock, mud, deceased animals).
• Removing debris from culverts, tunnels, etc.
• Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt.
• Digging ditches.
• Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers and signs, warning signs, and lighting.
• Filling potholes and roadway cracks.
• Setting out signs and cones for traffic control.
• Removing and covering graffiti.
• Installing pavement markings/striping.
• Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations.
• Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs.
• Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment.
• Must be willing and physically able to work in extreme temperatures and elevations up to 12,000 feet.
