Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a roadway maintenance worker responsible for operating and maintaining highway equipment and performing preventive maintenance and manual labor. The role includes emergency operations and snow removal, along with ensuring traffic control and site safety according to MUTCD guidelines.

You will contribute to safe, efficient roadways by following established procedures, reading plans, and working as part of a team.

Qualifications

• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months; comply with DOT/VDOT policies.
• Capability to perform heavy manual labor and operate/maintain highway equipment.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light/medium highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare equipment for snow removal; clear roadways and provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment.
• Job Safety: Protect worksites and follow safety regulations (OSHA, VOSHA).
• Manual Labor: Perform manual tasks and use hand/power tools as needed.
• Preventive Maintenance: Conduct repairs, replacements and pre-trip inspections.
• Traffic Control Devices: Install and manage traffic control devices using MUTCD standards.
