Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a dedicated maintenance worker to operate light, medium, and heavy highway equipment and perform preventative maintenance and manual tasks on roadways. The role includes snow removal, traffic control, and safety-focused duties in support of emergency operations and routine maintenance.

You will follow MUTCD guidance for detours and work zones, wear appropriate PPE, and collaborate with a crew to complete projects.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Must obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Must be able to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergencies; manage detour and lane closure activities using MUTCD guidance.
• Identify workplace safety hazards and implement improvements; ensure proper PPE and safe work environment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; complete pre-trip inspections.
• Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones and detours using MUTCD guidelines.
• Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and objectives through manual labor and tool use.
