Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation in Beaufort County seeks a crew leader to coordinate construction, repair, and preservation work on roads.

You will operate heavy equipment such as motor grader, excavator, backhoe, and slope mower, and supervise crew safety and daily flagging operations. You will maintain records in HMMS and help create weekly schedules, ensuring high equipment utilization in varying conditions.

Qualifications

• Two years of related work experience or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate construction, repair, and preservation tasks for roads in Beaufort County.
• Operate heavy equipment such as motor grader, excavator, backhoe, and slope mower.
• Instruct crew daily in safety practices (flagging, PPE, vehicle safety, hazards).
• Maintain accurate records in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS).
• Assist Foreman with investigating and addressing work requests; adjust schedules as needed.
• Create and implement weekly work schedules; maximize 95% equipment utilization.
• Verify daily/monthly maintenance reports and deliver to shop supervisor/RMF.
• Work in inclement weather and during emergencies; may include 12-hour shifts and on-call duties.
