Job summary

VIAS Infrastructure is seeking a Roadway Design Engineer in Charlotte, NC. The role focuses on designing roadway improvements from concept through construction documents, with a strong emphasis on ORD proficiency and adherence to North Carolina standards.

The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of roadway design experience, a Civil Engineering degree, and a working knowledge of AASHTO guidelines. Hybrid work options are available and opportunities for licensure support are offered.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of roadway/transportation design experience.
• ORD proficiency required.
• Familiarity with NCDOT projects and design standards preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and construction documents.
• Perform horizontal and vertical alignment design, superelevation, and grading with ORD.
• Coordinate with utility, drainage, and structural disciplines throughout project development.
• Prepare design calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
• Ensure compliance with state/municipal design standards and project requirements.
• Collaborate with project managers, clients, and agency stakeholders on deliverables and schedules.
• Assist in preparation of permits, right-of-way documents, and technical specifications.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled Roadway Design Engineer to join our team.

The Roadway Design Engineer will be responsible for supporting the design of roadway improvement projects from concept through construction documents. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation in highway design, hands‑on experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD), and a working knowledge of North Carolina standards and processes.

Responsibilities

• Develop roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and construction documents for transportation and multi-modal projects
• Perform horizontal and vertical alignment design, superelevation, and grading using OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
• Coordinate with utility, drainage, and structural disciplines throughout project development
• Prepare and review design calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates
• Ensure compliance with state and/or municipal design standards, policies, and project-specific requirements
• Collaborate with project managers, clients, and agency stakeholders on project deliverables and schedules
• Assist in preparation of permits, right-of-way documents, and technical specifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Minimum 2 years of experience in roadway/transportation design
• Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer (ORD) is required
• Experience with NCDOT projects and design standards

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure
• Experience working directly on state-funded and municipal transportation projects
• Knowledge of drainage design and utility coordination as it relates to roadway projects
• Familiarity with MicroStation and other Bentley design tools
