Job summary

The City of Altoona is seeking a Streets Maintenance Worker to perform manual labor and operate a range of construction and maintenance equipment. The role involves winter snow removal and routine upkeep of city streets, sidewalks, and public infrastructure under the Streets Supervisor.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or GED and 1–2 years of equipment operation experience or 3 years mechanical work; valid Iowa driver’s license and CDL within 3 months of hire may be required.

Qualifications

• Education – High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
• Experience – 1–2 years operating light/medium construction equipment or 3 years in a mechanical position.

Responsibilities

• Operate maintenance and construction equipment safely (dump trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, saws, welders, drill press).
• Operate snow removal equipment and plows; manually remove snow as needed.
• Load/unload heavy objects and assist with equipment maintenance/repairs.
• Repair, replace and maintain street signs and markers.
• Perform concrete flat work and finishing for roadways and sidewalks.
• Maintain city streets, sidewalks, public infrastructure and facilities as directed.
• Drive street sweeping vehicles to clean streets.
• Attend training as directed by Streets Supervisor.
