Job summary

King County seeks twoCrew C chief positions to lead day-to-day activities of roadway maintenance crews in unincorporated areas. You will supervise crews, coordinate with WLRD and partners, and ensure safety, environmental compliance, and efficient delivery of projects.

Minimum qualifications include 2+ years in roadway/public works and proven ability to manage diverse teams, plan resources, and read plans and GIS data.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in roadway/public works maintenance or construction.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, OSHA/WISHA, fall protection, confined space, and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse crew while fostering inclusion.
  • Knowledge of workload planning, resource allocation, scheduling, procurement, and cost estimation for road projects.
  • Experience planning and overseeing field work with coordination of personnel, equipment, and schedules.
  • Knowledge of drainage and stormwater infrastructure and associated maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of environmental requirements and regulatory permits applicable to road/stormwater work.
  • Ability to evaluate field conditions and select appropriate means and methods for safe, efficient completion.
  • Reading and interpreting construction plans, maps, GIS data, elevations, and blueprints.
  • Experience using City works or similar systems to plan, document, and monitor work.
  • Strong judgment, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and forecast resource needs.
  • Experience developing and tracking labor, equipment, and material estimates.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, schedule, and lead crew work activities; coordinate personnel, equipment, materials, traffic control, and project schedules to complete assigned work.
  • Monitor onsite work, provide direction and guidance to crews, evaluate field conditions, and adjust methods, sequencing, staffing, and resources as conditions change.
  • Ensure crews comply with safety standards and environmental regulations (OSHA/WISHA) and permits, codes, and specifications.
  • Monitor job site safety by identifying hazards and initiating corrective actions.
  • Coordinate maintenance and construction with WLRD and partner agencies; manage project scope, scheduling, environmental requirements, resources, and field operations.
  • Plan and oversee specialized road maintenance and drainage activities involving catch basins, manholes, culverts, pipes, and slopes.
  • Read and interpret plans, maps, GIS information, specs, elevations, grades, and blueprints for field ops.
  • Use City Works and other systems to plan, assign, document, track, and close out work.
  • Monitor and document employee performance and time reporting; provide coaching and corrective direction.
  • Respond to emergencies and unplanned maintenance such as flooding, erosion, and weather-related issues.
