Job summary

Beaufort County is seeking an experienced equipment operator for the Public Works division. The role involves coordinating projects, operating heavy equipment for road and drainage work, and ensuring safety and efficient operations across sites.

Minimum qualifications include a High School diploma or GED and 2–4 years of related experience; a valid state commercial driver’s license is required. Drug screening and background checks are mandatory prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, assign and review work; establish work schedules and standards.
  • Operate heavy equipment to construct, maintain roads and drainage systems.
  • Inspect equipment and perform routine maintenance; ensure site safety and traffic control.
  • Record daily reports, walk-around inspections and logs.
  • Supervise equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Comply with drug screening and background checks.

Job description

The purpose of this position is to assist in the coordination of projects, operate heavy and medium equipment and perform manual work associated with the operations of an assigned Public Works’ division.

Examples of Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Leads and performs routine maintenance on the County's roads which may include operating chainsaws to cut trees and limbs, operating commercial weed eaters and earth compactors, preparing site-mixed concrete and operating County vehicles to include small dump trucks.
  • Unclogs drainage with various equipment and vehicles, including vac truck, excavators, etc.
  • Cleans debris from drainage systems.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment to construct, reconstruct and maintain roads and drainage systems.
  • Checks for and repairs sinkholes.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.
  • Record daily reports such as walk around inspections, daily worksheet and daily log book, etc.
  • Inspects equipment.
  • Performs site safety and provides traffic control.
  • Supervises the maintenance, cleaning, and repair of equipment.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience.
Special Certifications And Licenses
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
