Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking a Motor Vehicle License Examiner to conduct road tests and evaluate applicants for all license categories, ensuring fitness based on standard guidelines.

Under supervision, the examiner assesses documents, directs applicants through testing, and provides immediate, clear feedback with recommendations for improvement. Strong customer service and driving record checks are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One year of extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public plus customer service experience, OR 30 college credits plus six months of such interaction.

Responsibilities

• Examine documents for authenticity and verify applicant identity; may confiscate suspicious documents.
• Inspect test vehicle conformance with DMV requirements.
• Direct applicants through road test routes and evaluate driving performance.
• Provide immediate feedback and explain results and reasons for failure; make recommendations.
• Determine if license restrictions (glasses, hearing aids, etc.) apply.
• Enter test results into a computerized tablet and maintain/resolution of electronic equipment.
