A Brief Overview
Provides professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit/area, utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. Works flexible work schedules within the service line in accordance with Float Pool staffing guidelines.
What You Will Do
- Provides nursing care according to medical regime and the nursing intervention appropriate for the patients' conditions and according to established standards, policies and procedures including care of the medicine and surgery patient. Initiates assessment based on the patient's presenting problems or needs, the physician's medical diagnosis and the functional health framework upon admission and patient assignment. Collects key information from patient, family, laboratory, and other medical reports. Determines nursing diagnosis and priorities for care with special consideration given to patient teaching, discharge planning, and the growth and development needs of the patient. Determines which standards of care and practice apply to the patient. Documents assessment, including nursing diagnoses or other clinical judgments. Demonstrates knowledge and technical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills to provide care, maintain clinical competency and meet age-specific patient needs within the unit. Demonstrates ability to manage the care of patients with conditions common to the assigned unit.
- Performs clinical rounds and completes ongoing assessments according to nursing division policy and/or as determined by patient's condition, re-prioritizes care based on new information, continues to update nursing diagnoses, and involves family and/or other significant individuals in assessment activities.
- Assesses plans and implements care of assigned patients. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the Physician, consistent with primary and population-specific standards of care and practice, with consideration given to knowledge gained from the initial and ongoing assessment of the patient. Demonstrates competencies and adheres to policies regarding risk management, infection control, and patient safety. Prepares and maintains required records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Maintains a clean, safe environment for patients and staff.
- Determines the impact of nursing interventions on the patient's condition and recognizes the patient's progress towards meeting desired outcomes.
- Documents care based on standards of care and practice, including assessment findings, clinical priorities, therapeutic interventions, patient education, discharge planning, and responses to interventions.
- Prepares equipment/supplies and assists physicians during treatments, procedures, and examinations. Performs specialized duties applicable to the assigned unit.
- Responds and/or participates in medical emergencies. Initiates and/or assists with CPR/BLS/ACLS as required.
- Provides education to patients/families regarding their conditions. Develops and implements patient teaching plans including objectives, content, strategies, and evaluation.
- Maintains accurate patient medical records, documents care provided, and utilizes computer systems for data entry and retrieval.
- Collaborates with patients, families, and hospital staff regarding patient needs, discharge planning, referrals, and coordination of care, in a courteous and compliant manner.
- Supervises LPNs and support personnel in patient assessments and care. Assists with orientation and supervision of new staff and students.
- Transports patients, specimens, equipment, and supplies as needed.
- Collaborates with forensic and security teams to ensure safety for patients in custody.
- Completes required training and maintains licensures and certifications.
- Works flexible schedules within the service line according to staffing guidelines.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved nursing program.
- Qualified to work with various patient populations as dictated by the specialty assignment.
- RN licensure in Tennessee or a Compact State, required upon hire.
- CPR/BLS certification upon hire, required.
- Additional licenses or certifications may be required based on the area of assignment.
- Minimum of 1 year recent RN experience, required.
