Qualifications

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.
  • Current BLS, ACLS and PALS certification is required or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • 2 years of job-related experience and sufficient in-service and orientation regarding Surgery Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the delivery of nursing care in the Surgery Department and identify problems and any need for improvement.
  • Plan individualized nursing care in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and other members of the health care team.
  • Provide comprehensive, individualized care to patients based on identified needs.
  • Administer prescribed medications following established policies and procedures.
  • Document appropriately on all forms, records, etc.
  • Communicate the plan of action and progress to goal achievement to appropriate colleagues.
  • Provide recovery care to patients following surgery as per established Recovery Room Policies and Procedures.
  • Attend Nursing Service meetings and other meetings as requested, delivering in-service education as assigned.

Job description

Assists the Director of Surgery to ensure the successful operation of the Surgery Department by performing duties following physician's orders and Russell Regional Hospital Surgery and Recovery Room Departmental Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

Licensure/Education:

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas. Current BLS, ACLS and PALS certification is required or obtained within 60 days of hire. 60% of continuing education credit hours pertain to operating room skills and management standards. Ability to speak, write, and understand English.

Experience:

2 years of job-related experience and sufficient in-service and orientation regarding Surgery Policies and Procedures before starting to work independently. Must have the ability to maintain patient and Hospital confidentiality.

Job Knowledge:

Ability to communicate with persons of various backgrounds in a tactful, courteous manner. Must have comprehensive, timely knowledge of nursing theory and practice and be able to incorporate such knowledge in all conditions varying from the usual to the extraordinary and emergency. Has knowledge of and understands the importance of maintaining aseptic and sterile technique.

Essential Job Functions

Assessment:

Ability to assess the delivery of nursing care in the Surgery Department and identify problems and any need for improvement.

Ability to assess the health status of assigned patients.

Ability to organize assessment data so that it is accurate, complete, accessible and so that it remains confidential.

Planning:

Ability to plan individualized nursing care in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and other members of the health care team.

Ability to plan ways to solve problems and make improvement in the Surgery Department in collaboration with supervisory personnel.

Implementation:

Ability to provide comprehensive, individualized care to patients based on their identified needs.

Ability to continually be aware of where instruments, needles and sponges are at all times. Cares for instruments during and following surgery, and provides for decontamination of the instruments.

Ability to anticipate the surgeons needs during each case.

Ability to administer prescribed medications following established policies and procedures.

Ability to provide an environment for the patient that is safe and therapeutic.

Ability to provide teaching activities based on assessed needs including any home health instructions.

Ability to document appropriately on all forms, records, etc.

Ability to communicate the plan of action and progress to goal achievement to appropriate colleagues.

Ability to carry out physician's orders.

Ability to know of and comply with policies and procedures.

Ability to comply with regulatory agencies/mechanisms and procedures for control of supplies.

Ability to insure that all equipment is in optimum working condition.

Ability to provide recovery care to patients following surgery as per established Recovery Room

Policies and Procedures.

Ability to know of policies, procedures, and equipment needed in an emergency including Code Blue.

Ability to attend Nursing Service meetings and other meetings as requested, developing and delivering in-service education as assigned.

Ability to assist other surgery personnel.

Ability to adhere to established Personnel Policies and Procedures.

Evaluation:

Ability to evaluate achievement or lack of achievement of desired outcomes, reassesses and revises the nursing care plan.
