Corewell Health's Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids is seeking a registered nurse for the Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit, a 22-bed ICU within the Meijer Heart Center. The role focuses on trauma and surgical patients, ventilator care, titration of life-sustaining medications, and assisting with bedside procedures.

Candidates should have an ADN or BSN, MI RN license, BLS and ACLS certifications, and at least 1 year inpatient RN experience.

Qualifications

• Associates in Nursing required.
• Bachelor's in Nursing required within 5 years.
• MI Registered Nurse (RN) required.
• AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days.
• AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required within 6 months.
• 1+ years of inpatient RN experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge patients using the nursing process.
• Provide professional nursing care with patient-family centered approach under Nurse Leader guidance.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and participate in patient teaching and care coordination.

About The Unit

The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22-bed intensive care unit in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth Hospital. The surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. The trauma population includes geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi-trauma requiring critical care needs, and the critical care adult burn population. The surgical population includes trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery with critical care needs. Nurses in the surgical ICU also provide care to medical and neuro critically ill patients. Our nurses are competent in the care of patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining titratable medications including cardiac and sedation medications and assist with procedures such as bedside tracheostomies and central line placement. With experience and competence surgical ICU nurses can become specialty trained to care for patients requiring continuous renal replacement therapy as well as manage the care of critically ill burn patients. Nurses working in the surgical ICU gain detailed assessment skills, critical thinking behaviors, as well as developing communication skills while working in a dynamic environment. The surgical ICU is a fast-paced unit that relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach with not only provider teams, but ancillary staff to deliver excellent and effective care. RN’s will have the opportunity to provide care to the critical patient on ventilators, provide titration of life-sustaining medication, cardiac and sedation medication. The nurse will assist with procedures such as bedside tracheostomy specialty line placements and can train for management of continuous dialysis and burn care.

Scope of work

The RN, under the ANA scope of practice utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge. The RN provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures and recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes. The RN partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care and develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in health record.
