ResponsibilitiesJob SummarySupervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development; determines and maintains unit or program needs and standards (using nursing process and evidence-based information). Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into their job performance. Assists the Clinical Director in managing the unit's assigned staff and patient population. Provides direct patient care according to the needs of the unit/program and collaborates with physicians in executing the medical plan of care.
All RN staff responsible for stroke patient care must have knowledge of:
* Stroke symptoms and warning signs
* Protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate, and manage stroke patients
* NIHSS
* Stroke Alert activation and protocol
* Stroke quality indicators
* Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
* Educational requirements
* Stroke Center website resources
- Oversees staff to ensure adequate patient care, including hiring/onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and developing employees to ensure productivity, quality, and goal alignment. Establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, including administering medication, checking dosages, avoiding interactions; starting, maintaining, and discontinuing IV lines for fluids, medication, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; observing and recording patient responses; and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. Ensures compliance with policies and maintains financial stewardship by managing department budgets.
- Serves as a resource to staff, patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and visitors to enhance patient experience, clinical outcomes, and a healthy work environment. Teaches patients and families about managing illnesses or injuries, post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-administration of medications. Facilitates inter/intra departmental collaboration and communication, promotes problem solving, and participates in policy revisions and committees. Contributes to goal setting and action planning for the unit.
- Supports recruitment and retention of talented staff through positive role modeling, fostering peer relationships, staff education, and participation in preceptor and mentor programs. Coordinates educational and professional activities aligned with department needs.
- Regularly rounds with physicians, patients, or families to promote quality practice and improve patient experience. Uses the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide care and evaluate patient plans. Initiates and supports quality improvement initiatives and utilizes resources effectively.
- Directs staff in applying the nursing process, providing care coordination, and promoting independent functioning among employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducationBachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN, BScN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution.
Legally licensed to work as a registered nurse in Arizona.
All staff responsible for stroke patient care must meet specific educational requirements listed in the addendum.
ExperienceMinimum 2 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience required.
Licenses and CertificationsValid RN license in Arizona or a compact state.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Must obtain area-specific certification within 1 year of hire or promotion for magnet standards.
