Description: UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, and the Perinatal Clinical Operations Coordinator provides essential 24/7 on-site leadership combining clinical operations management with administrative support for the perinatal service line. This role oversees daily operations and coordinates patient flow processes from triage to discharge for birthing patients, newborns, and neonates at two campuses (La Jolla Jacobs Medical Center with a level III NICU and Hillcrest with a level II NICU). The service line currently manages over 5,000 deliveries per year.

This position is designed to enhance operational efficiency, patient safety, and experience through real-time clinical leadership and administrative support to the perinatal leadership team.

Essential Functions

Clinical Operations

  • Dynamic Resource Allocation: Real-time deployment of nursing staff across 134 beds (66 OB + 68 NICU) based on census and acuity, maintaining appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios.
  • Clinical Crisis Response: Immediate response to obstetric and neonatal emergencies, neonatal resuscitations, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bi-Campus Coordination: Facilitate patient transfers, float staff between campuses, and ensure resource balance across both facilities.
  • Patient Flow Management: Oversee admissions, transfers, and discharges to optimize bed utilization with safety and quality standards.
  • Physician Partnership: Primary nursing liaison for on-call physicians, facilitating communication and care delivery.
  • Staff Support & Retention: Real-time mentoring and conflict resolution for approximately 80 staff per shift in high-stress environments.
  • Quality & Safety Surveillance: Monitor safety indicators, identify near-misses, and implement corrective actions.

Administrative Support Functions (as Directed)

  • Scheduling Support: Assist with staff scheduling, coverage adjustments, and coordination with unit leadership.
  • Timekeeping & Payroll: Support timekeeping, verify hours, manage time-off requests, and payroll documentation.
  • Staffing Analysis: Compile and distribute patient flow metrics, census, staffing reports, and productivity data.
  • Resource Management: Contribute to cost-effective use of supplies and resources.
  • Quality Projects: Assist with quality improvement projects, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Communication & Documentation: Maintain professional communication and accurate records.
  • Problem Resolution: Identify issues, develop action plans, and collaborate with nursing, physicians, and other departments.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  • RN license issued by the state of California.
  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six months.
  • Current advanced NRP certification.
  • Two or more years of perinatal nursing experience (L&D, Mother-Baby, NICU).
  • Advanced knowledge of high-risk obstetrical or neonatal care.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in acute care.
  • Strong crisis management and rapid decision-making
  • Excellent communication and influence skills with staff, physicians, patients, and external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nursing, Business, or Healthcare Administration.
  • Clinical area certification (e.g., RN NIC, or Nursing Administration Certification).
  • Advanced NRP and/or AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring Certification.
  • Two or more years of nursing leadership or Charge RN experience.
  • Experience with Epic and Epic Stork; payroll systems and workforce tools.
  • Previous experience at UCSD Health inpatient perinatal units.

  • This position integrates clinical operations leadership with administrative support, requiring flexibility between clinical coordination and administrative work.
  • Shift differentials may apply; on-call occasionally.
  • Weekend and holiday shifts required.
