Job Description

The RN, with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and institutional policies, procedures, and guidelines. The RN functions under their own license and assumes accountability and responsibility for the quality of care provided to patients and their families according to the standards of nursing practice. The RN demonstrates responsibility for continued competence, reflecting on practice, engaging in lifelong learning, and maintaining professional standards.

Shift and Schedule

Full Time. 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM.

Essential Functions/Performance Expectations
  • Complete a comprehensive assessment, including initial and ongoing extensive data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Synthesize the data collected during the comprehensive assessment to identify problems, make nursing diagnoses, and formulate goals, teaching plans, and outcomes.
  • Implement the plan of care, delivering, assigning, or delegating interventions within legal, ethical, and regulatory parameters while considering health restoration, disease prevention, wellness, and promotion of healthy lifestyles.
  • Evaluate and report patient outcomes and responses to therapeutic interventions compared to benchmarks from evidence‑based practice and research findings, and plan follow‑up care and referrals as needed.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, including education with patients and families, physicians, and other health‑care team members, and maintain professional communication skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using the electronic medical record, providing accurate, timely, and complete documentation of the plan of care and assessments while respecting patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Provide a safe environment for patients, families, and co‑workers, including handwashing and adherence to infection control policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, including current AED competencies, following dress code policies, and participation in orientation of new team members.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree (ADN) or diploma in nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. MMH nurses are prepared at the BSN level with support for pursuing a BSN education. A BSN and certification in the clinical area of expertise required to advance within the clinical nurse professional practice ladder.
  • Licensure: Current State of Texas License as a Registered Nurse.
  • Preferred Certifications: Area of specialty within 2 years of employment (Certified MedSurg, or Orthopedic Nurse).
  • Early Acute Stroke recognition and treatment preferred.
  • Required to complete eight (8) hours of hospital‑provided continuing education upon hire and annually for Total Joint and Spine. Education focuses on care of total hip, knee and shoulder replacement as well as elective spine surgery patients.

  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak, and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and 50 lbs. for non‑clinical staff. Assist‑lift devices or assistance required for lifts over these limits.
