- Properly utilizes the nursing process in caring for patients by maintaining relevant, accurate and current patient records as evidenced by Nursing PI activities.
- Provides documentation of assessment of the patient throughout the Hospital admission including physical, psychological, social dimensions and discharge plans. Summarizes assessment data and initiate plan of care with communication of pertinent data to allied patient care providers as evidenced by Nursing PI activities.
- Understands, assumes, and demonstrates proficiency in the role of charge nurse.
- Demonstrates proficiency in Computerized Nursing Informatics (information systems).
- Assumes role of resource person regarding patient care, orientation and teaching staff.
- Participates in at least four-unit staff meetings per year, attends mandatory programs and obtains three hours of Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC) credit per year.
- Participates in identification of the aspects of care for the patient, indicators used to monitor the quality and appropriateness of care, and the evaluation of that care. Adheres to safety, blood/body fluid policies and procedures.
- Assesses personal learning development needs. Maintains documentation of current and ongoing professional development activities. Regularly up-dates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the age of the patient served. Shows a willingness to participate on Nursing Committees.
- Represents hospital in the community and within the hospital by maintaining confidentiality regarding patients and hospital matters and by presenting the hospital in a manner that will best market the services provided.
- Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested his/her immediate supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities
- Accountable for coordinating all daily operating activities of the Operating Room (See reference guide at Center Core.) in conjunction with Nurse Manager and the Department of Anesthesia.
- Assists in the supervision of personnel and department to provide quality patient care and a safe environment for all.
- Assists in staff development and education and in identification of unit needs.
- Assists in additional duties as directed by Nurse Managers.
- Provides and controls material, supplies and equipment needed for efficient, successful operation of the Operating Room.
- Supervises the control and maintenance of drugs, i.e. inventory of pyxis.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. BSN Preferred.
- One year OR experience or Peri-op 101 Training Program required.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Basic Life Support Certification required.
- Must read, write and communicate in English.
- Use of lead apron required.
- On-Call is required for off-shift, weekends and holidays.
- Completion of scrub training for cesarean sections within 2 years of position.
When the Hospital offers a transition or novice program, the following qualifications apply:
Transition To Operating Room Nursing
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Basic Life Support Certification required.
- Must read, write and communicate in English.
- BSN Preferred.
- O.R. experience strongly preferred.
- Use of lead apron required.
- On-Call is required for off-shift, weekends and holidays.
- One-year Med/Surg experience. Required for consideration for OR Training Program.
- Successful passage of the O.R. exam during Probationary Period is required for RN’s in the RN Training Program.
- Completion of scrub training for cesarean sections within 2 years of position.
Purpose of Position
Delivers patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Administers and monitors patient responses to all medications. Directs and guides patient care, teaching and activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing within the realm of Hospital Policy. Maintains and delivers the highest quality customer service standards.
Schedule Details
During Training Program, 40 Hrs. Per Week, Rot. Days 6:45a-3:15p, Occ. Weekends & No holidays, On Call Required. After training program has concluded, 40 Hrs. Per Week, Rot. Days, 9:00a - 5:30p, may rotate to 11a - 7:30p; Rot. weekends & Rot. Holidays, 11p-7 on call shifts required.
