Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA is seeking an RN - Oncology for a full-time Evening/Night shift. The 22-bed blended medical-surgical/progressive cancer care unit delivers complex oncology care with interdisciplinary collaboration.

The RN provides age-specific nursing care, coordinates care plans, and utilizes EMR for treatments and documentation. Nurse Residency required; strong emphasis on patient advocacy and safety.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program required.
  • Current Virginia RN license with less than 1 year of experience.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. ACLS/PALS/NRP may be required based on assigned work area.
  • Must attend required Nurse Residency Program sessions.
  • Keyboarding skills and computer literacy, including use of electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for patients of all ages on the unit.
  • Collaborate with health care team to develop, implement, and evaluate age-specific interdisciplinary plans of care.
  • Administer and document treatments and medications using electronic medical records.
  • Provide patient and family education and advocacy.
  • Support performance improvement activities and contribute to quality of care.

How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:

This unit is a 22-bed blended medical-surgical/progressive cancer care unit that specializes in the complex care of the Oncology patient. Nurses utilize the science and art of nursing while collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of the patient and family. We are a Commission on Cancer (COC) accredited facility.

As a registered nurse (RN), you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with our patients, their families, visitors, and with each other. As part of the health care team, RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. The registered nurse also utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.

The RN

  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Age specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented and used to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Functions as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians. Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.
  • Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
  • Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making.
  • Assists with providing education activities for unit/department.
What We Require:

Education: Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program required.

Experience: None required.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Current Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia required with less than 1 year of experience. For Behavioral Health roles, de-escalation training must be completed within 1 year of hire and maintained.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. Additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or NRP may be required based on assigned work area.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must attend required Nurse Residency Program sessions. Keyboarding skills and computer literacy required, including use of electronic medical records.

Career Advancement Program: RNs are eligible to participate in the Career Advancement Program (CAP) to attain various levels of advancement based on performance criteria.

Compensation Range: $33.52 - $50.28

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
