Position Summary

The RN, Mental Health provides therapeutic, recovery-oriented nursing care to patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions or behavioral health crises. This role conducts comprehensive mental and physical health assessments, monitors changes in patient status, and implements individualized nursing interventions that support safety, stabilization, and emotional well-being. Working collaboratively with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and interdisciplinary support staff, the RN helps ensure coordinated treatment planning and effective crisis response. As part of a supportive, team-based behavioral health environment, this position fosters a healing, trauma-informed setting that respects patient dignity and promotes engagement in the recovery process.


Key Responsibilities


  • Conduct mental health and physical assessments, observing for changes in behavior, mood, risk level, or response to treatment.

  • Implement therapeutic interventions, administer medications, and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions to psychiatric treatments.

  • Participate in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and safety planning to maintain a secure and supportive environment for patients and staff.

  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient participation in treatment accurately within the electronic health record.

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop, update, and evaluate individualized care plans that support stabilization and recovery.

  • Provide patient and family education on diagnosis, coping strategies, and available community resources as appropriate.


QualificationsLicenses and Certifications Required:


  • Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.

Educational Requirements:


  • RN program as evidenced by licensure.


Experience Requirements:


  • Hospital experience is preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

The RN, Mental Health frequently walks and stands while monitoring patient activity, performing assessments, and supporting daily therapeutic routines. The role may require assisting with patient mobility, responding quickly during crisis situations, and engaging in physical interventions only when necessary for safety. Adequate vision, hearing, and communication skills are essential to observe behaviors, assess risk, and maintain awareness in an active unit environment.


Environmental Requirements:

This position works within a secure behavioral health unit with exposure to patients experiencing emotional distress, hallucinations, agitation, or unpredictable behavior. The RN must follow safety protocols, emergency procedures, and de-escalation techniques to minimize risk and maintain a therapeutic environment. Occasional exposure to bodily fluids and cleaning agents may occur, requiring adherence to PPE and infection-control standards. The role involves maintaining composure in high-stress situations while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.
