Job summary

Position Summary:

The LPN, Mental Health provides therapeutic, recovery-oriented nursing care to patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions or behavioral health crises under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other appropriate licensed provider. This role monitors patients' mental and physical health status, administers medications, performs assigned nursing interventions, and reports changes in condition to support patient safety, stabilization, and emotional well-being. Working collaboratively with RNs, psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and interdisciplinary support staff, the LPN contributes to coordinated treatment and effective crisis response. Through compassionate, trauma-informed care, this position helps maintain a safe and supportive environment that respects patient dignity and promotes engagement in the recovery process.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor patients' mental and physical health status, observing and reporting changes in behavior, mood, risk level, symptoms, or response to treatment.
• Provide nursing care and therapeutic interventions within the LPN scope of practice and established plan of care.
• Administer medications and monitor patients for therapeutic response, side effects, or adverse reactions, reporting concerns as appropriate.
• Participate in crisis intervention, de-escalation, safety measures, and established behavioral health protocols to maintain a secure and supportive environment.
• Document nursing care, observations, interventions, medication administration, and patient response accurately within the electronic health record.
• Collaborate with the RN and interdisciplinary team by communicating patient needs, observations, and changes in condition and contributing to the implementation and evaluation of individualized care plans.
• Reinforce patient and family education regarding treatment, medications, coping strategies, and available resources as directed and within scope of practice.

Qualifications:

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Current or temporary LPN license in North Dakota or compact LPN licensure.

Educational Requirements:

• LPN program as evidenced by licensure.

Experience Requirements:

• Hospital or behavioral health experience preferred but not required.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:

• As required by specific units.
• Ability to effectively communicate and interact with patients experiencing behavioral health conditions or emotional distress.
• Ability to utilize established crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.

Physical Requirements:

The LPN, Mental Health frequently walks and stands while monitoring patient activity, providing nursing care, and supporting daily therapeutic routines. The role may require assisting with patient mobility, responding quickly during crisis situations, and participating in physical interventions only when necessary for safety and consistent with training and organizational procedures. Adequate vision, hearing, and communication skills are essential to observe patient behavior, recognize changes in condition, and maintain awareness within an active behavioral health environment.

Environmental Requirements:

This position works within a secure behavioral health environment with potential exposure to patients experiencing emotional distress, hallucinations, agitation, or unpredictable behavior. The LPN must follow established safety protocols, emergency procedures, and de-escalation techniques to minimize risk and maintain a therapeutic environment. Occasional exposure to bodily fluids, infectious materials, and cleaning agents may occur, requiring adherence to PPE and infection-control standards. The role requires the ability to remain composed and responsive in high-stress situations while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.
