Job summary

Carilion Clinic is seeking a Registered Nurse I for the Palliative Care unit in Roanoke. This inpatient unit features 10 private rooms with team-based, interdisciplinary care focusing on relief of symptoms and stress for patients with serious illness.

You will collaborate with nurses and aides to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Eligibility includes Virginia RN licensure, BLS-HCP, and EPIC proficiency.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or approved program eligible to sit for Virginia RN licensure.
• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
• AHA BLS-HCP required; ACLS/PALS/NRP may be required based on unit.
• Computer skills required for EPIC electronic medical record.

Responsibilities

• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum outcomes.
• Age-specific admission and ongoing assessments with documentation and care planning.
• Collaborates with the health care team and family to develop and revise interdisciplinary care plans.
• Administers and documents treatments/medications using electronic medical records.
• Educates patient and family, and participates in performance improvement activities.
• Acts as patient advocate and provides psychosocial support.
• Supports growth and development considerations in patient care.
• Engages in orientation and training of new staff.

How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

The Palliative Care unit is an adult inpatient medical—surgical unit with 10 private patient rooms that have excellent views of the Roanoke Valley. Comprised of Registered Nurses and Nursing Assistants, our nursing team is specially trained at providing care for people living with serious illness. Palliative Care focuses on relief of symptoms and stressors of a serious illness. Our focus is patient centered, and with the Palliative Care team, we provide interprofessional assessment and comprehensive management of patients’ and families’ physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and bereavement needs.

Responsibilities:

• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
• Age specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented and used to develop a plan of care.
• Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status.
• Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
• Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately.
• Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
• Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
• Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
• Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
• Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
• Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
• Functions as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians. Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.
• Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.
• Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
• Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
• Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
• Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making.
• Assists with providing education activities for unit/department.

What We Require:

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.

Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

Compensation Range:

$33.52 - $50.28

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
