Description

Administrative Functions

  1. Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
  2. Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
  3. Ensure that reference material (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards of practice) maintained at the nurses' stations is current.
  4. Recommend written material that will assist the nursing service department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents.
  5. Ensure that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects the daily nursing procedures performed in this facility.
  6. Ensure compliance of all nursing service personnel with the procedures set forth in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  7. Make reports/recommendations to the Director concerning the operation of the nursing service department as necessary/required.
  8. Periodically review policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, and make revisions as needed.
  9. Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
  10. Ensure compliance of nursing staff with their respective job descriptions.
  11. Participate in the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  12. Participate in facility surveys made by government agencies upon request.
  13. Review and update resident discharge plans as required, and assist in planning the nursing services portion of discharge plans.
  14. Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services, programs, and activities.
  15. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  16. Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  17. Interpret policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and agencies as required.
  18. Perform administrative duties such as completing forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
  19. Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information and report any violations.

Committee Functions

  1. Attend various facility committee meetings as required.
  2. Assist in preparing reports of nursing programs and activities.
  3. Provide information to Quality Assurance and Assessment Committees.
  4. Participate in developing agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  5. Implement committee recommendations as instructed by the Director.

Personnel Functions

  1. Ensure adequate staffing of licensed nurses and nursing assistants.
  2. Develop work assignments and delegate responsibilities appropriately.
  3. Ensure all nursing assistants are properly trained and supervised.
  4. Conduct daily rounds to monitor staff performance.
  5. Monitor absenteeism and report issues.
  6. Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and dress codes.
  7. Review complaints and grievances and report as necessary.
  8. Maintain good working relationships with staff and other departments.
  9. Create a positive work environment.
  10. Meet regularly with staff to address issues and improve services.
  11. Review staffing needs and make recommendations.
  12. Administer disciplinary actions fairly and without bias.
  13. Report occupational exposures and violations of confidentiality or security.

Nursing Care Functions

  1. Coordinate with staff for admissions and discharges.
  2. Greet and orient new residents.
  3. Make rounds and observe residents' physical and emotional status.
  4. Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  5. Review nurses' notes for completeness and accuracy.
  6. Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  7. Start IVs, collect specimens, and perform vital signs.
  8. Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions for issues.
  9. Keep the Director informed of residents' status.
  10. Assist in monitoring seriously ill residents.
  11. Authorize and monitor medication administration and treatments.
  12. Ensure cleanliness and safety of treatment areas.
  13. Meet with residents and families as needed.
  14. Arrange transportation for discharges and notify families of resident deaths.

Staff Development

  1. Develop and conduct in-service training programs.
  2. Participate in continuing education to stay current in the profession.

Safety and Sanitation

  1. Develop safety standards and ensure compliance.
  2. Identify and record functions involving potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  3. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
  4. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of work areas.
  5. Participate in safety drills and infection control programs.
  6. Follow procedures for reporting hazards and hazardous chemicals.

Equipment and Supply Functions

  1. Recommend equipment and supply needs.
  2. Maintain adequate stock levels.
  3. Assist in preventive maintenance programs.
  4. Ensure safe operation of equipment.
  5. Use supplies efficiently and according to policies.

Care Plan and Assessment Functions

  1. Participate in assessments and development of care plans.
  2. Encourage resident participation in care planning.
  3. Review and revise care plans as needed.

Budget and Planning

  1. Recommend adjustments based on economic conditions.
  2. Suggest equipment needs and report suspected fraud.

Supervisory Requirements

  1. Assist in supervising and managing nursing staff.
  2. Delegate authority and responsibilities appropriately.

Qualifications

  1. Must possess a Nursing Degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing preferred.
  3. Minimum 2 years experience, preferably in long-term care.
  4. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  5. Ability to perform mathematical and reasoning tasks.
  6. Current, active RN license and CPR certification required.
  7. Knowledge of PCC and ongoing licensing requirements.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Must be able to move, see, hear, and work effectively in various environments, including potential exposure to hazards and infectious materials. Must meet health requirements and be able to lift at least 25 pounds. Work may involve irregular hours and emergency response.
