Overview
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the staff nurse is responsible for applying the nursing process, evidence-based knowledge, judgment, and technical nursing skills to deliver care to patients with medical and surgical conditions during an assigned shift.
Responsibilities
- Obtain and interpret patient information based on age-specific standards; recognize growth and development issues; make appropriate care decisions for the patient’s age group.
- Maintain standards of care for patients with medical and surgical diagnoses.
- Complete educational requirements for caring for Stroke patients; apply ASA standards; apply ONS standards for Oncology patients.
- Use the nursing process to assess patient condition, document findings in EHR, and implement appropriate interventions.
- Evaluate patient responses, communicate with the healthcare team about care plan revisions.
- Implement discharge planning based on patient needs.
- Initiate and document patient education in understandable language.
- Document assessments, interventions, changes, and responses; respond effectively in emergencies.
- Prevent hospital-acquired conditions and falls.
- Communicate with colleagues and interdisciplinary team regarding pressure injury prevention and treatment.
- Adhere to HIPAA confidentiality policies; ensure patient safety through proper identification, accurate documentation, and medication error prevention.
Qualifications
Education
Internal & 1199 SEIU:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
Non 1199 SEIU Candidates:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Master's degree in Nursing preferred.
Experience
- Minimum three years of medical-surgical nursing, charge nursing, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge and Skills

- Ability to read, write, see, and hear in English.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current NY State RN License.
- BLS from the American Heart Association.
- ACLS from the American Heart Association.
- Medical Surgical Certification.
Physical Requirements
- Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged standing, reaching, walking.
- Ability to stoop, bend, lift, carry up to 35 pounds routinely.
- Exposure to environmental hazards, bloodborne pathogens, and chemicals.
- Full body motion, ability to lift up to 100 pounds if necessary.
- Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination.
- Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Sitting at a desk working on a computer.
- Flexible working hours.
