Overview
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the staff nurse is responsible for applying the nursing process and evidence-based knowledge, judgment, and technical nursing skills to deliver care to patients or groups with medical and surgical conditions during an assigned shift.
Responsibilities
- Obtain and interpret patient information based on age-specific standards; recognize growth and development issues; make appropriate care decisions for the patient population.
- Maintain standards of care for patients with medical and surgical diagnoses.
- Complete educational requirements for caring for Stroke patients; apply ASA standards; apply ONS standards for Oncology patients.
- Utilize the nursing process: assess patient condition, document findings in EHR, implement interventions, evaluate responses, and communicate with the healthcare team.
- Implement discharge planning and patient education tailored to the patient's language and treatment plan.
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses per hospital policy, including emergency actions when necessary.
- Contribute to the prevention of hospital-acquired conditions and falls.
- Communicate with colleagues regarding patient care, prevention, and treatment needs, including pressure injury management.
- Apply HIPAA regulations to safeguard patient information and maintain a culture of safety through proper patient identification, accurate documentation, and medication error prevention.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program; Bachelor's degree preferred. Non-1199 SEIU candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing; a Master's degree is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum three years of medical-surgical nursing, charge nursing, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Critical thinking, math, and computer skills; team player; respectful and professional; excellent communication; decision-making and problem-solving skills; proficient in English.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current NY State RN License; BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association; Medical Surgical Certification.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, reach, walk for prolonged periods; lift up to 35 pounds routinely; may be exposed to various hazards; capable of lifting up to 100 pounds; manual dexterity; normal vision and hearing; ability to work flexible hours.
