Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse Supervisor, the Registered Nurse is accountable for the coordination of care for patients and their families including direct care, patient and family education, and discharge planning. While providing care, the Registered Nurse will follow the nursing process of assessing, nursing diagnosing, outcome identification, planning, implementing and evaluation. In addition, the Registered Nurse provides leadership for ancillary staff by being a team leader, being a preceptor, and being an active member of the emergency department team. The Registered Nurse practices within AZ State Board of Nursing standards and the standards of their specialty. The Registered Nurse is expected to uphold and set the example of professional conduct of the profession and consistently displays the values and mission of Sage Memorial Hospital in their encounters with everyone.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assesses the needs and conditions of assigned patients by gathering relevant patient health information.
  • Identifies outcomes, develops a plan of care individualized to the patient and/or situation, and implements the identified plan appropriate for the attainment of expected outcomes.
  • Contributes to patient experience by providing safe, high quality & patient centered care by respecting patients’ privacy, and treating all patients, families, and guests with dignity, respect, and compassion.
  • Evaluates patient conditions frequently and adapts plan of care appropriately.
  • Maintains infection prevention standards.
  • Collaborates and strives to have a positive working relationship with the ED staff and contribute to the teamwork of the Emergency Department.
  • Recognizes adverse signs and symptoms, which are not always apparent, and reacts promptly in emergency situations, including implementing life-saving procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the medical or surgical provider such as medication treatment, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, oxygen therapy, etc.
  • Maintains health records by documenting observations, nursing interventions and therapeutic measures administered in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.
  • Delegates tasks and supervises the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers as appropriate in accordance with licensure standards.
  • Act as charge nurse when assigned.
  • Act as a preceptor nurse for new nurses when assigned.
  • Assists in providing accurate, prompt direct and indirect nursing care.
  • Accurately takes and records patient data, perform EKGs, and point-of-care testing or tasks, and reports critical values to providers.
  • Completes triage and assessment of patients, including conducting interviews of patients to obtain pertinent health history data and other information, documents chief complaints, review electronic health records (EHR).
  • Displays effective communication skills, accurately provides patient education, adheres to proper channels of communication in a courteous, cooperative, and timely manner, protects patients’ rights and confidentiality.
  • Administers certain oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, topical, intradermal, inhalation, instillation, and infusion medications per provider’s order or protocols.
  • Maintains accountability for a safe environment for patients and others, adheres to safety regulations, ensures environment is organized and problems are addressed.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency/crisis situations, clinic or facility-wide, including participating in code blue calls.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability of professional growth, attends 80% of department meetings.
  • Assists in inventory management, assists with Quality Improvement projects and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Focuses on personal development areas, engaging in professional/collegial interactions with peers and students.
  • Ability to correctly use departmental patient care/ non-patient care and specialized equipment (EKG, defibrillators, IV pumps, ventilators, rapid infusers, glucometer, bladder scanner, etc).
  • Provides Navajo interpretation for patients, either self or through a trained interpreter.
  • Accepts and adapts to changes in work area, including float to different care areas to assist with nursing care to meet the patient and organizational needs of the critical access hospital if applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Nursing, BSN strongly preferred.
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience preferred; would consider a new nurse if nurse residency program has vacancy.
  • Valid unrestricted nursing license from the state of Arizona or another compact state.
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association required. ACLS, PALS, TNCC required within 45 days of hire. NRP required within 6 months of hire.
  • Successfully pass the background investigation and employee health program.
