Job Summary

The Charge Nurse will possess and have the capabilities to perform all the major duties and critical tasks of a Registered Nurse in the Oncology specialty area. Practice is characterized by predominantly interdependent decision-making, focused on patient-centered care. The Charge Nurse manages unexpected or emergency situations common in the specialty population. Through the nursing process, the Charge Nurse provides leadership to unit personnel, serves as a professional role model, and ensures appropriate patient care, teaching, and discharge planning. Acts as a resource for nursing staff, directs ancillary activities, and maintains standards per the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Responsible for human and fiscal resources to deliver quality, cost-effective patient care.

Major Responsibilities
  • Perform technical procedures/skills in oncology, including administration of cancer-specific medications and treatments.
  • Flexibility to float to other units as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other disciplines regarding patient care and well-being.
  • Report regularly to the Nurse Manager.
  • Provide supervision and direction to professional and ancillary staff, ensuring quality care.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately based on staff skills and knowledge; take corrective action when performance issues arise.
  • Assist in performance appraisals and staff counseling.
  • Participate actively in staff development initiatives.
  • Support the UT Health Northeast team concept across departments.
  • Oversee departmental maintenance, supplies, and unit functionality; ensure the environment is safe, clean, and well-stocked.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices to prevent harm.
  • Promote system-wide activities for hand hygiene and infection prevention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
  • Experience with EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice for patient care evaluation.
  • Understanding of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Proficiency with medical equipment and safety protocols.
  • Problem-solving skills and solution-oriented approach.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited RN program.
  • Five years of RN experience in Oncology preferred.
  • At least two years of RN experience as a charge nurse or supervisor preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current RN license to practice in Texas.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • OCN certification preferred upon hire or within 24 months; 12 oncology-related CEUs per year if not certified.
  • Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certification preferred within 90 days of hire.
