Behavioral Health Unit (BHU)

Jefferson's BHU consists of 24 adult beds. We provide inpatient services to individuals experiencing mental health crises, such as suicidal ideation. Disorders served include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia. Services offered include medication management, social services, occupational therapy, and group therapy.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Registered Nurse assesses human responses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for individuals or families. The nurse is fully responsible for all actions as a licensed professional and is accountable for the quality of care provided.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide leadership within a professional practice setting.
  2. Contribute to team success through role modeling and mentoring.
  3. Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and staff skill levels, including duties during charge roles.
  4. Maintain a safe environment, considering patient conditions, intervention complexity, and expected outcomes.
  5. Provide verbal and written feedback to peers on clinical practice and role performance.
  6. Share knowledge and skills with colleagues.
  7. Accept mistakes constructively, fostering a culture of safe risk-taking.
  8. Participate in interdisciplinary evaluations of clinical care or health services.
  9. Promote patient safety initiatives, such as National Patient Safety Goals.
  10. Engage in department-specific quality initiatives, ensuring appropriate order set usage.
  11. Supervise and evaluate LPNs within their scope of practice as appropriate.
  12. Use the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate, and implement individualized patient care plans.
  13. Set culturally and age-appropriate outcomes involving patients, families, and providers.
  14. Analyze health status data to identify patient care needs.
  15. Monitor patient condition changes, notify physicians or supervisors, intervene, and document appropriately.
  16. Accept assignments beyond primary units within your competency.
  17. Commit to lifelong learning for self and others.
  18. Participate in professional organizations and ongoing education using current research and evidence-based practices.
  19. Engage in peer review and seek feedback to identify strengths and areas for development.
  20. Adhere to time and attendance policies.
  21. Regularly evaluate patient and family satisfaction and participate in related initiatives.
  22. Communicate compassionately, addressing concerns effectively.
  23. Manage time efficiently to complete duties within shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Clearance
  • Current PA RN license or multi-state license via eNLC
  • CPR certification

Preferred:

  • Specialty certification
