Job summary

Xcel Energy is offering an internship for engineering students to work with the Engineering staff on plant projects, capital and operations/maintenance. You will assist with performance analyses, emissions control, and contract management.

The internship runs with a May 24, 2027 start date. Ideal candidates are ABET‑accredited students pursuing electrical, mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering and able to work up to 40 hours weekly in person under a hybrid policy.

Qualifications

  • Current student enrolled in ABET-accredited program pursuing engineering degree.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and commute to the designated work location per hybrid policy.
  • Preferred coursework in power generation or project management.
  • Proficiency in writing technical reports and evaluating technical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Support plant projects (capital and ops/maintenance) with Engineering staff.
  • Perform performance/efficiency analysis and emissions control.
  • Assist with contract and project management.
  • Specify new and replacement equipment.
  • Make process improvement recommendations.
  • Support technical requests from operations and maintenance.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Responsibilities include working with the Engineering staff to support plant projects, both capital and ops/maintenance.
  • Performance/efficiency analysis
  • Emissions control

  • Specifying new and replacement equipment
  • Making process improvement recommendations
  • Supporting technical requests from operations and maintenance

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Junior or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in engineering, studying areas such as electrical, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering.
  • Able to work full‑time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in‑person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completed coursework in power generation or project management and an interest in the power industry
  • Proficiency with writing technical reports and evaluating technical documentation.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $23.10 to $24.60 per hour
