Job summary

Metropolitan Transportation Authority seeks an Emerging Talent Intern for Risk Reduction in Safety Management Systems. The on-site role at Hillside Facility in Jamaica, NY involves assisting with hazard analysis, safety data organization, and supporting the Fatigue Risk Management program throughout several safety projects.

The internship requires good academic standing, strong communication and team skills, and the ability to work independently as part of a proactive safety team.

Responsibilities

• Support Fatigue Risk Management program requirements, coordinate meetings and project activities, prepare draft reports and communications.
• Assist in identification, evaluation, and mitigation of operational hazards with proper documentation and timely risk management actions.
• Identify workplace hazards, maintain accurate JHA records, and support proactive safety improvements.
• Support regulatory compliance and contribute to continuous improvement of Fatigue Risk Management Program.
• Ensure organized safety information to support decision-making and communication.
• Promote efficient project execution and provide operational support for Risk Reduction initiatives.

Position Title: Risk Reduction, Safety Management Systems, Emerging Talent Intern

Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

The Long Island Rail Road’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) division leads the railroad’s enterprise-wide safety strategy and execution aligning policy, risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion to deliver a safe and compliant transportation experience for employees, customers, contractors, and the communities the railroad serves. We operate in compliance with the
Federal Railroad Administration’s System Safety Program Plan (SSPP)requirements and apply modern SMS principles across our day‑to‑day operationsand capital projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Will help identify hazards, organize and analyze safety data, maintain and update Job Hazard Analysis documentation.
• Support Fatigue Risk Management program requirements, coordinate meetings and project activities, prepare draft reports and communications, resolve routine data discrepancies.
• Support the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of operational hazards while ensuring accurate documentation and timely completion of risk management activities.
• Help identify workplace hazards, maintain accurate JHA records, and support the implementation of proactive safety improvements.
• Support compliance with regulatory requirements and contribute to the effective implementation and continuous improvement of the Fatigue Risk Management Program.
• Ensure accurate, organized, and accessible safety information that supports decision-making, communication, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Promote efficient project execution, maintain organized departmental processes, and provide operational support for Risk Reduction initiatives.
• Provide administrative and operational assistance essential to advancing safety initiatives.

PROJECTS:

• Update and maintain Job Hazard Anaslysis Documentation through identifying hazards and organizing and analyzing safety data.
• Provide administrative and operational assistance essential to advancing safety initiatives, such as coordinating meetings and project activities, prepare draft reports and communication, and resolve routine data discrepancies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
• The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
• The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
• The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

• Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
• Major(s) Preferred: Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Human Factors, Public Administration, Business Administration, Data Analytics, or a related field.
