Risk Manager (Healthcare/Medical Malpractice)
Risk Manager (Healthcare/Medical Malpractice)

Provides healthcare risk management recommendations and creates and delivers risk management educational programs, with the goal of promoting patient safety and mitigating the risk of claims. Participates in maintaining and enhancing the professional relationship between the Company, its insureds, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and other partners. Collaborates with other departments in creating and delivering service and retention plans.

Location Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be based in the Midwest or Southeast region of the US, but candidates who live in other locations will also be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Responds to specific risk management questions from OMIC insureds and their staff.
  • Acts as a resource to OMIC staff.
  • Develops ophthalmic-specific risk management resources, such as consent forms, recommendations, and courses.
  • Works collaboratively with the Risk Management Committee, OMIC Board, and the Risk Management team, to develop and implement risk management programs and activities.
  • Presents ophthalmic-specific seminars for physicians, technicians, nurses, and administrators to insured groups, at partner society meetings, and at the AAO Annual Meeting.
  • Creates tailored risk management services for large groups.
  • Conducts site visits as required.
  • Participates in retention activities.
  • Conducts claims studies of clinical and risk topics as the basis for articles and courses.
  • Regularly contributes to Risk Management Department publications.
  • Works with Academy staff to meet the risk management and practice needs of its members.
  • Researches and writes loss prevention articles for Academy, specialty society, and ophthalmic-specific publications (e.g., EyeNet, Retina Times, etc.). Acts as a resource for editors and staff writers for ophthalmic publications.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Required Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree. At least five years’ experience in claims or risk management at a medical malpractice insurance company or loss prevention department of a healthcare facility.

Required Skills:

  • Experienced in creating and presenting risk management educational seminars to physicians and other healthcare providers, both in person and via live and pre-recorded webinars.
  • Knowledge of medical and health care terminology; ability to review medical records and assess loss prevention issues in professional liability claims for use in the development of risk management courses and activities.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations pertaining to medical professional liability (e.g., HIPAA; informed consent; scope of practice, etc.).
  • Strategic thinking, problem-solving, and listening skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Skilled in conducting internet research of medical professional liability, healthcare, and ophthalmic-specific risk management topics.
  • Works well independently and in a remote environment.
  • Collaborates effectively with team as necessary to support department and company goals.
  • Ability to manage competing demands and deadlines.
  • Reliable, accountable, respectful; flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of videoconferencing platforms, Oasis, and ImageRight preferred.

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Travel Requirements:

Must be able to travel to domestic locations multiple times a year. Must be able to attend weekend conferences in a variety of cities.

Starting Salary: $114,516 (outside of SF Bay Area); $127,240 (SF Bay Area)
