University of Utah Risk & Insurance Services (URIS) provides services to identify, manage, and monitor risks across programs. This role offers administrative, operational, and professional support to the Director and Managers within URIS, enabling learning and development in risk management and insurance practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations of automobile, liability, and property claims, including fact gathering, loss mitigation, claim evaluation, settlement coordination, and claim closure.
  • Communicate effectively by phone, email, and in person to investigate, negotiate, and resolve claims in a timely and professional manner.
  • Utilize risk management and claims information systems to document, track, and manage claims and related activities.
  • Process financial transactions and claim payments in accordance with departmental procedures and supervisory direction.
  • Serve as a resource to the University community by providing guidance on risk management, insurance, and claims-related matters.
  • Maintain department databases and records, and prepare reports, analyses, and information requests as needed.
  • Assist with the renewal and administration of commercial insurance policies and self-insurance programs.
  • Process Certificates of Insurance and review special event applications.
  • Provide guidance regarding University driver training requirements.
  • Evaluate potential risk exposures and recommend appropriate risk mitigation and loss prevention measures.
  • Direct inquiries to departmental resources, including the Risk & Insurance Services website and other University offices, as appropriate.
  • Support departmental projects and initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

University of Utah Risk & Insurance Services ( URIS ) provides entrepreneurial and innovative services that assist individuals, departments, and administrators in identifying, managing, and monitoring risks associated with their programs and activities. URIS encourages ingenuity and leverages the upside of risk.

This position provides administrative, operational, and professional support to the Director and Managers of Risk & Insurance Services. The incumbent performs a wide range of ongoing functions and serves as a resource for internal stakeholders at all levels of the University, as well as external partners. This role offers an opportunity to learn and develop skills within the risk management and insurance profession.

The successful candidate will be a team-oriented, detail-focused, and self-motivated professional with strong organizational and communication skills. The individual must be comfortable handling difficult conversations with internal and external parties, demonstrate reliability and accountability, and maintain confidentiality while managing multiple responsibilities and deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

  • Experience in claims administration, risk management, insurance operations, or office administration is preferred but not required.
  • The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and service-oriented professional who is detail-oriented, self-motivated, organized, dependable, and able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, follow through on assignments, and contribute positively to a team environment is highly valued.
  • Prior experience working at the University of Utah or within a higher education environment is preferred but not required.
