Job summary

Blackhawk Network seeks a Senior Engineering Leader for Risk Engineering to guide a distributed team and own the strategic roadmap. You will balance hands-on coding with architectural decisions, partnering with product and security teams to reduce risk and improve performance.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in Java, strong leadership, and experience with AWS and AI/ML concepts for risk modeling. This hybrid role is based in Coppell, TX.

Qualifications

• 8+ years hands-on experience building commercial products with Java.
• 2+ years of management experience leading distributed engineering teams.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent; Master's
• Experience designing and building REST services and microservice architectures.
• Proven ability to design scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems.
• Knowledge of security best practices in web app development (OWASP).
• Experience with AWS and cost optimization; Agile delivery experience.
• Familiarity with ML concepts and AI/LLM concepts for risk model integration.
• Strong communication skills to explain technical topics clearly.

Responsibilities

• Directly manage ~10 engineers across multiple US locations; oversee career growth, performance, and hiring.
• Contribute code and review architecture decisions while enabling roadmap delivery.
• Partner with Product Owners to shape the Risk Engineering roadmap.
• Own sprint execution, backlog grooming, planning, and velocity tracking.
• Manage stakeholder relationships across Risk Ops, Compliance, Payments, and Identity teams.
• Own AWS cost accountability and drive optimization aligned with sustainability goals.
• Promote AI-assisted engineering practices using Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
• Represent team in cross-functional planning and elevate blockers.
