Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a Public Works employee to maintain and repair streets, sidewalks, and associated infrastructure. Responsibilities include snow removal, drainage maintenance, and operating heavy equipment, with required CDL-B within six months of hire.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related construction experience. On-call nights and weekends may be required, and safety adherence is essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent and two years of related construction experience.
• Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement within 6 months from hire date.
• Experience with street, sewer and storm drainage construction is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain streets, sidewalks and surrounding areas; patch potholes and resurface for drainage.
• Replace sidewalks and curbs; raise or lower manhole or storm drain covers.
• Operate and perform basic maintenance on division equipment (dump truck, loader, plows, backhoe).
• Clear snow and ice; apply salt as required during storms.
• Locate sewer line breaks and perform repairs; assist in seasonal maintenance of street and drainage systems.
• Gather asset information using handheld devices, GPS, and tablets; document field data.
• Interact professionally with co-workers and the public; serve as City Ambassador.
• Assist recycling collection and remove debris as needed; support homeless encampment cleanups.

Job description

This position is responsible for maintaining, installing and repairing safe and clean City streets and sidewalks. This position also performs construction, maintenance and repair work on City streets, grounds, sidewalks, buildings, sewers and storm collection and drainage systems. Operates snowplow and other snow removal equipment as requested during and after snowstorms.

Pay Grade 14: $28.08 - $31.27 Hourly

Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/month

• Repair and maintain safe and clean streets, sidewalks and surrounding areas; patch potholes, lay asphalt and resurface for proper drainage.
• Replace sidewalks and curbs.
• Raise or lower manhole or storm drain covers.
• Clean and clear trash, dirt and other debris from streets, sidewalks and surrounding areas.
• Operate, inspect and perform basic maintenance on street division equipment, including but not limited to: dump truck, front end loader, sidewalk plows, backhoe, etc.
• Clear streets, sidewalks and surrounding areas of snow and ice; salt as required.
• Locate sewer line breaks; repair appropriately.
• Perform seasonal street, sewer and storm drainage maintenance duties, including but not limited to: repairing lawns, fences, driveways damaged by snowplow operations, etc.
• Gather asset information for various categories of infrastructure, making use of hand-held computer, GPS receiver and tablet.
• Unclog sewer lines and clean storm drainage basins. Complete written forms, enter information in the field on tablet.
• Act as “Ambassador” for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
• Perform recycling collection duties, on an as needed basis, when recycling staff numbers are insufficient to effectively collect recycling.
• Clear trash, debris, and belongings on an as needed basis from identified homeless encampments.

Non-Essential Functions

• High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related construction experience, such as, highway, sewer, and drainage construction required.
• Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License Class B, with tanker endorsement within 6 months from date of hire.
• Backhoe, plowing with seven-yard dump truck, concrete work experience preferred.
• Must operate snowplow and other snow removal equipment as requested during and after snowstorms.
• Ability to raise and lower manhole covers, storm drain covers required.
• Ability to operate all related equipment, for example, concrete mixers, bucket loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, sweepers, back hoe, skid steer, and all related hand and power tools etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions required.
• Must be able to be on call and work nights, weekends and holidays as required.
