Job summary

Sugar Bowl Resort in California is seeking a Lead Groomer to achieve and maintain quality grooming for our cross‑country guests. The Lead Groomer supervises and mentors the other operators to ensure an excellent grooming product, with a strong emphasis on safety for both cat and driver.

You’ll inspect the grooming cats, work closely with Vehicle Maintenance, and set the standard for a great day on groomed trails.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full‑time grooming experience on modern grooming machinery with tillers.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver License with driving record meeting insurance standards.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in mountain weather and near moving mechanical parts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to guests, employees, and business partners.
  • Operate tracked grooming equipment on ski trails.
  • Coach, mentor, and teach operators safe grooming practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of the grooming system and schedules.
  • Inspect equipment before and after operation; assist with maintenance.
  • Document and report condition of grooming machinery to management.
  • Monitor weather to determine AM/PM grooming cycles.
  • Prepare and adjust grooming schedule with changes in conditions.
  • Assist with snow removal and facility access as needed.

Royal Gorge is looking for a Lead Groomer to achieve and maintain quality skiing for our cross‑country guests. The Lead Groomer supervises and mentors the other operators to ensure an excellent grooming product, with a strong emphasis on safety for both cat and driver. You’ll also regularly inspect the cats and work closely with Vehicle Maintenance to guarantee they’re operating properly and leaving the best possible surface - setting the standard for what a great day of skiing at Royal Gorge feels like, one groomed trail at a time.

Who You Are:
  • 5+ years of full‑time grooming experience on modern grooming machinery with tillers
  • Able to perform each essential duty of this role successfully and safely
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver License, with a driving record meeting the minimum standards required by Sugar Bowl Corp’s insurance carrier
  • Prior experience in a management or lead capacity
  • Comfortable working exposed to outside mountain weather conditions and in proximity to moving mechanical parts
What You’ll do:
  • Provide excellent customer service to guests, employees, and business partners
  • Operate tracked equipment on ski trails
  • Coach, mentor, critique, and teach operators safe and effective grooming practices
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Royal Gorge’s extensive track system
  • Know clear‑weather and snow‑weather‑specific grooming patterns
  • Inspect equipment before and after operating grooming machinery
  • Assist with grooming machinery maintenance, including checking fluid levels, machinery condition, and other areas to keep equipment safe and properly maintained
  • Document and report the condition of grooming machinery to management and Vehicle Maintenance
  • Monitor weather and snow conditions to determine AM or PM grooming cycles
  • Operate grooming machinery and perform job duties in extreme weather conditions during late evening and early morning hours
  • Prepare the grooming schedule, modify it as conditions and staffing dictate, and inform management and operators of changes
  • Assist with snow removal, including shoveling and clearing walkways, paths, and other areas as necessary
Physical Requirements:
  • Comfortable sitting for extended periods while operating a snowcat, with frequent climbing on and off the machine
  • Capable of working outdoors in extreme, cold winter weather conditions, often during late evening and early morning hours
  • Able to shovel and clear snow, including heavy, wet snow, as neededComfortable working in proximity to moving mechanical parts and heavy machinery
  • Manual dexterity for equipment inspection, basic maintenance checks, and machinery operation
  • Sufficient visual and auditory acuity to safely operate machinery and monitor changing weather and trail conditions
