Job summary

Type One Energy is hiring an RF Engineer for the Electron Cyclotron Heating team to design and validate a quasi-optical transmission line delivering high-power millimeter-wave beams from gyrotron sources to the plasma vessel.

You will work with physicists and engineers to grow expertise across microwave and optical domains, with opportunities in a hybrid work model and relocation support.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral or Master’s degree in EE/Physics or closely related field.
  • Experience in microwave or millimeter-wave engineering, RF design/analysis/testing.
  • Knowledge of Gaussian beam optics and mm-wave propagation.
  • Proficiency with electromagnetic/multi-physics tools (CST, HFSS, COMSOL).
  • Hands-on microwave measurement with VNAs, power meters, beam profilers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and team collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of quasi-optical transmission line components for high-power millimeter-wave delivery.
  • Perform Gaussian beam optics analysis and diffraction simulations for beam propagation.
  • Model QO components with EM tools and validate against system requirements.
  • Specify and coordinate fabrication with machinists and vendors; ensure tolerances.
  • Conduct low-power measurements to characterize beam pattern and insertion loss.
  • Support high-power conditioning and commissioning of QO line with the ECH team.
  • Develop and maintain drawings, reports, and test procedures.
  • Stay current with advances in QO and millimeter-wave engineering; cross-discipline collaboration.
