Job summary

Type One Energy Group is seeking an RF Engineer—Microwave & Quasi-Optics to design, analyze, and validate a high-power QO transmission line delivering millimeter-wave beams to the plasma vessel at our Knoxville/Madison sites.

You will work with physicists and engineers on beam propagation, optical components, and system integration, advancing fusion energy hardware while growing your expertise across multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree or Masters in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • Experience in microwave or millimeter-wave engineering (RF design, analysis, or testing).
  • Knowledge of Gaussian beam optics and free-space propagation at millimeter/sub-millimeter frequencies.
  • Proficiency with electromagnetic simulation tools CST, HFSS, COMSOL, etc.
  • Hands-on microwave measurement techniques and lab instrumentation (VNAs, power meters, beam profilers).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills translating system requirements to components.
  • Curiosity and ability to learn across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration in multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to design of QO transmission line components (waveguides, mirrors, polarizers, beam shaping).
  • Perform Gaussian beam optics analyses to characterize beam propagation and losses.
  • Use EM simulation tools to model QO components and validate designs.
  • Coordinate fabrication of microwave components with machinists and vendors.
  • Conduct low-power bench measurements for beam pattern, insertion loss, polarization.
  • Support high-power conditioning and commissioning activities for the QO transmission line.
  • Develop and maintain engineering docs including drawings and test procedures.
  • Stay current with QO and millimeter-wave engineering advances.
  • Interact with thermal, mechanical, and neutronics teams.
