Job summary

Type One Energy Group in Knoxville, TN invites an RF Engineer to join the Electron Cyclotron Heating team, designing a quasi‑optical transmission line for high‑power millimeter‑wave delivery.

You will collaborate with physicists and engineers to model, test, and validate QO components, and contribute to system integration, documentation, and cross‑disciplinary studies.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral or Masters degree in a closely related field and proven experience in microwave or millimeter-wave engineering.
  • Experience with RF component design, analysis, or testing at millimeter-wave frequencies.
  • Familiarity with Gaussian beam optics and free-space propagation at mm-wave frequencies.
  • Proficiency with EM/multi-physics simulation tools (CST, HFSS, COMSOL).
  • Hands-on microwave measurement techniques and lab instrumentation (VNAs, power meters).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with system-to-component translation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to the design of QO transmission line components for high-power mm-wave delivery.
  • Perform beam optics analysis and diffraction simulations to characterize propagation and losses.
  • Use electromagnetic tools to model component performance and validate against requirements.
  • Coordinate fabrication of precision microwave components with machinists and vendors.
  • Conduct low-power bench measurements to map beam patterns and measure insertion loss.
  • Support high-power conditioning and commissioning activities for the QO line.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, and test procedures.
  • Stay current with advances in QO and millimeter-wave engineering and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Interact with thermal, mechanical, and neutronics teams.
