Responsibilities:
  1. Coding for Revenue Accuracy:
    • Review clinical documentation to accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes, ensuring codes support medical necessity, charge capture, and compliance billing practices.
    • Apply modifiers correctly to ensure appropriate reimbursement and prevent denials.
    • Ensure coding complies with Official Coding Guidelines, payer regulations (including TRICARE), NCCI edits, and DoD/DHA policies impacting revenue.
  2. Revenue Cycle & Work Queue Management:
    • Utilize MHS GENESIS (Cerner Millennium) to review documentation, assign codes, and investigate coding-related revenue issues.
    • Monitor, prioritize, research, and resolve coding and billing-related edits in electronic work queues.
    • Meet productivity and quality standards for coding accuracy and timeliness.
  3. Charge Validation and Reconciliation:
    • Validate that generated charges are appropriate and supported by documentation and coding.
    • Identify discrepancies, investigate, and recommend corrective actions.
  4. Compliance and Auditing Support:
    • Adhere to HIPAA and maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Stay current with coding updates, payer rules, and regulations impacting revenue.
  5. Collaboration and Process Improvement:
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on coding guidelines.
    • Provide feedback on documentation improvements.
    • Identify trends and contribute to process improvements.
    • Participate in project teams, ensuring objectives and client needs are met.
    • Follow project processes, communicate effectively, and manage time efficiently.
    • Document communications and maintain effective communication with stakeholders.
The “Need-to-Have” Skills & Qualifications:
  • Certification: Valid coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC.
  • Experience: Minimum 3+ years in medical coding with revenue integrity experience.
  • EHR Experience: Proficiency with Cerner Millennium, especially MHS GENESIS.
  • Work Queue Management: Proven ability to manage revenue cycle work queues.
  • Knowledge: ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS, medical terminology, healthcare revenue cycle, payer requirements, HIPAA.
  • Skills: Attention to detail, analytical skills, computer proficiency, communication, independence, prioritization.
  • Access: Active security clearance with DHA preferred.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.

Years of Professional Experience:

2-4+ years in healthcare or consulting, preferably in federal environment.

The “Nice-to-Have” Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience coding in Military Health System, DoD, or VA.
  • Experience in multiple specialties or encounter types.
  • Bachelor’s in HIM or related field.
  • Additional specialty credentials.
