Summary of Position’s Purpose
The Retiree Return-to-Work Substitute Teacher provides instructional support by serving as a substitute teacher on an as-needed basis. This position ensures continuity of learning by maintaining a positive classroom environment and implementing lesson plans provided by the regular classroom teacher.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be retired from Teachers' Retirement System of Louisiana
- Louisiana teaching certificate preferred; additional criteria as established by the School Board

Responsibilities
Designing and Planning Instruction
- Measurable and explicit goals aligned to state content standards
- Activities, materials, and assessments aligned to state standards
- Logical sequencing building on students’ background knowledge
- Appropriate time allocation for student work, reflection, and lesson/unit closure
- Regular opportunities to accommodate individual student needs
Assignment and Assessment Plans
- Student work assignments and assessments aligned to pre- and post-tests
- Assessments aligned to state standards with clear measurement criteria
- Description of how results will be used to inform future instruction
Learning Environment
- Classroom management techniques varied to promote positive student behavior
- High and demanding expectations set for every student, encouraging growth through mistakes
- Classroom physical arrangement organized and accessible to all students
Instruction
- Standards and objectives aligned to state content standards, logically sequenced, and explicitly communicated
- Content organized to motivate inquiry, curiosity, and exploration
- Instruction presented with visuals, examples, analogies, and labels for efficient mastery
- Lesson segmented with clear beginning, middle, end, and time for reflection
- Variety of materials and activities aligned to objectives, addressing learning styles and intelligences

Professional Responsibilities

- Preparedness and participation in PLCs using student work to enhance proficiency
- Seeking feedback from supervisors and colleagues
- Reporting child abuse or suspected neglect to proper authorities
- Addressing negative attitudes or practices to honor all students emotionally and academically
- Managing textbook distribution, collection, and fee collection for damaged or lost books
- Leadership responsibilities and assistance to peers in maintaining a safe and orderly environment
- Providing families with frequent updates on student progress with professional and cultural sensitivity
- Attendance at faculty meetings, parent/teacher organization meetings, and other school functions
- Responsibilities for collection and distribution of all fees collected
- Performance of duties during recess, lunch, planning periods, and library periods
Instruction, Supervision, and Non-Instructional Components
- Instructional Components: Lesson planning, instruction, collaboration, grading, attendance, grade entry, timely parent communication
- Supervision: Monitoring students during school events, drop-off, classroom, recess, lunch, assemblies, and after school
- Non-Instructional Components: Attendance at faculty, staff, department, training, IEP, parent-teacher, open-house, graduation, and committee meetings
- Extracurricular Activities: Attendance at up to 15 athletic events per year and sponsorship of club activities
