Job summary

Safeway is seeking an Assistant Store Director to help run day-to-day operations, reporting to the Store Director. You’ll lead store performance, manage staff, and ensure exceptional customer service while controlling costs and maintaining safety standards.

The role requires strong leadership, planning, and analytical skills, plus extensive retail experience. This is a full-time, on-site position with opportunities for growth within Albertsons Companies’ Northern California Division.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; College degree preferred.
• Four or more years retail or managerial experience required.
• Retail grocery experience preferred.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Strong math and analytical skills.
• Demonstrated customer service and supervisory skills.
• Strong understanding of overall retail store operations.
• Strong leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to make quality decisions under time constraints.
• Ability to get along with others.

Responsibilities

• Overall management responsibility for the operation of a retail grocery store during absence of the Store Director, including store performance, cash control, inventory and security, customer service, and staff management.
• Supervise the front end and direct, discipline, and evaluate front end clerks.
• Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor to align with sales and wage budgets; address cost control issues.
• Support Store Director with development of strategies to improve product placement and appearance.
• Manage display accuracy and promotions; ensure in-stock conditions.
• Oversee store maintenance, cleanliness, safety and sanitation.
• Oversee cash handling and security; ensure store is secure.
• Coordinate work activities, plan resources, and meet deadlines.
• Ensure compliance with legal requirements and company policies.
• Focus on customer satisfaction and coach staff on service excellence.
• Interview and select applicants and advise on hiring and discipline.
• Provide feedback and developmental opportunities for staff.
• Maintain relationships with union officials and follow collective bargaining agreements where applicable.
• Maintain positive relationships with staff, peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers; handle difficult situations.
• Motivate staff and model company policies and positive attitude.
• Oversee Safety Program and Hazardous Waste compliance.
