Job summary

Powers Health is seeking a Student Respiratory Therapist at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, IN. The position supports respiratory therapy modalities under supervision, contributing to patient care plans and clinical assessments.

Applicants must be enrolled in an approved Respiratory Therapy program with an Indiana Student Permit and CPR certification. This supplemental, 6a–6p shift, is 0.1 FTE and offers exposure to acute care settings.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required.
• Maintain CPR certification.
• Current student in an approved Respiratory Therapy program; Indiana Respiratory Therapy Practitioner’s Student Permit must be provided.

Responsibilities

• Responds to all medical emergencies (Code Blue), maintains airway, establishes ventilation and assists in performing cardiac compressions for adults, pediatrics, and newborns.
• Administers aerosol, humidification and therapeutic gas(es) for adults.
• Delivers prescribed routine respiratory treatments for adults.
• Explains planned therapy and diagnostics to patient and family, considering age and culture.
• Assesses appropriateness of Respiratory Care Plan and suggests modifications based on patient response.
• Collects and evaluates clinical data to establish optimal therapeutic goals.
• Maintains attendance as required by hospital standards.

Position Summary

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, initiates and administers the full range of respiratory therapy modalities as outlined within the specifications of the Student RCP Permit. This includes applying clinical assessments and diagnostic results to the care plan of the patient.

Job Responsibilities

• Responds to all medical emergency (Code Blue), maintaining airway, establishes ventilation and assists in performing cardiac compressions in accordance with standards for Adult, Pediatrics/Children, Newborns/Infants.


• Responsible for aerosol, humidification and therapeutic gas(es) for Adults.


• Responsible for the administration of prescribed routine respiratory treatments of all types on adults only.


• Explains planned therapy and/or diagnostics to the patient, significant other and/or family and its goals taking into account age, culture.


• Responsible for determining appropriateness of prescribed Respiratory Care Plan and recommend modifications where indicated based on patient response.


• Responsible for collecting and evaluating pertinent clinical data (or recommend additional data) to establish optimal patient therapeutic goals.


• Maintains attendance as an essential requirement of the position and as designated by hospital standards .

Education/Experience

• High School Diploma


• Maintain CPR certification


• Current student in an approved Respiratory Therapy program. Must provide a current Indiana Respiratory Therapy Practitioner’s Student Permit.
