Location: Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital - 450 W. Hwy 22, Barrington
Shift: 2nd (3:00pm - 11:00pm)
FTE: 0.9 (Full-Time)
Summary: Responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensive respiratory care. The Respiratory therapist administers respiratory care procedures and modalities in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures. Using evidence-based practices, clinical decision making, and skilled communication, the therapist compassionately leads efforts to create the safest patient environment and the best patient experience across the continuum.
Major Responsibilities
- Uses respiratory therapy processes to support assessment of patients utilizing skills such as pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and blood gases. Identifies and addresses the specific needs of the patient population served.
- Operates specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings. Assists physicians with bedside or other procedures as applicable.
- Provides medication treatments and therapies as per physician orders and/or patient-driven respiratory protocols.
- Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper functionality of equipment. Troubleshoots equipment as necessary and identifies the need for service and/or repair.
- Educates and instructs patients on the purpose, technique, self-care, and disease management related to respiratory therapies.
- Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments to provide education on patient management.
- Adapts and complies with policies and procedures across various service areas under physician direction. Performs assigned tasks maintaining performance standards and organizational behaviors.
- Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills. Provides clear, concise, and timely patient handoffs.
- Promotes a safety culture by recognizing and applying safety measures to prevent patient harm. Reports safety events and near misses promptly, and assists in corrective actions.
- Teaches, educates, and precepts new team members, orientees, and students.
- Provides care appropriate to the patient's age, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development, and assessing data reflective of the patient's status to meet age-specific needs.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
- Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state.
- Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by NBRC within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential if received before January 1, 2023.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Additional site-specific requirements per Education/Certification Addendum.
Education Required
Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program, with at least an associate degree.
Experience Required
No experience required.

- Proficient in computer skills, including electronic medical records and email.

- Time management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize amidst interruptions.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Operate all necessary equipment.
- Lift objects up to 50 lbs from knee to waist and from floor to waist occasionally.
- Lift 40 lbs at waist height and carry over distances.
- Lift 20 lbs from waist to overhead.
- Push/pull with 30 lbs force occasionally over long distances.
- Perform stand-pivot transfers and sliding transfers safely.
- Use safe body mechanics at all times.
