Summary

A Respiratory Therapist Level 2 (RT2) manages patients of all ages with respiratory issues, providing care in general, critical care, and emergency settings. The RT2 position is part of an internal clinical advancement program and requires at least one year of experience post-graduation from an accredited respiratory care program.

Responsibilities
  • Perform physical assessments of pulmonary status and recommend appropriate respiratory care.
  • Administer oxygen via standard and specialized devices, including high flow and hyperbaric chambers.
  • Administer aerosolized medications using nebulizers, MDI, DPI, etc.
  • Administer inhaled nitric oxide or aerosolized prostacyclin as prescribed.
  • Evaluate and maintain artificial airways of various sizes.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain mechanical ventilators.
  • Perform advanced procedures for severe hypoxemia, such as prone positioning and lung recruitment maneuvers.
  • Manage non-invasive BiPAP & CPAP devices.
  • Transport critically ill patients on respiratory modalities.
  • Respond to hospital emergencies like rapid response and code calls.
  • Utilize approved RT protocols.
  • Perform ABG and other diagnostic tests.
  • Conduct EKG testing and other responsibilities as needed.
  • Document patient care activities and enter charges electronically.
  • Complete annual competencies and continuing education per hospital policy, credentialing, and licensing requirements.
  • Maintain active RT credentials and PA state RT license.
  • Perform duties aligned with Penn Medicine values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Level I
  • Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care, with at least 500 clinical hours.
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care program (CoARC accredited).
  • PA Respiratory Care License.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) within 1 year of hire.
  • BLS certification.
  • ACLS (NRP required within 6 months).
Level II
  • Associate's degree and 1+ years of clinical experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care program.
  • State of PA Respiratory Care License.
  • Registered by NBRC.
  • BLS certification.
  • ACLS recommended; NRP certification required within 6 months.

All credentials must be active and maintained per state and NBRC regulations.
