I. Position Function:
The Respiratory Therapy Department has formally adopted the American Association For Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines (AARC CPG) for patient care. Respiratory Therapists function in a physician-supervised environment following AARC CPG (where applicable) as well as established departmental standards and practices. Respiratory Therapists provide critical care services to patients of all ages.
II. Job Relationships:
- Reports to the Technical Manager of Respiratory Therapy (or his/her designee).
- Interacts with other healthcare professionals to plan, provide, monitor, and evaluate respiratory care services for outpatients.
III. Authority:
- Has the authority to provide all facets of critical care respiratory therapy based on patient assessment and within hospital/department policies, procedures, and the AARC CPG.
- In case of adverse response to therapy, the therapist will initiate emergency procedures, notify the responsible physician and nurse, and remain at the patient's bedside until relieved.
IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients, in accordance with Service Excellence Standards.
- Reviews the medical record including physician orders for completeness, indications for therapy, and potential contraindications prior to administering therapies/medications, following AARC CPG.
- Conducts clinical patient assessments, including cardiac, pulmonary, and neurologic status.
- Assembles equipment per manufacturer specifications and departmental standards, ensuring functionality before use, monitoring during use, and correcting malfunctions as needed.
- Administers therapies while monitoring patient outcomes, hazards, and complications, including maintaining, monitoring, and adjusting mechanical ventilators.
- Performs routine oxygen, aerosol, airway management, chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and sputum induction to maintain airways, following AARC CPG.
- Assesses patients and ventilator systems regularly per AARC CPG and departmental standards.
- Documents assessments, therapies, responses, and complications in the medical record per AARC CPG.
- Provides emergency response for cardiopulmonary arrest and respiratory emergencies, maintaining BLS certification annually.
- Participates in multidisciplinary care planning, documentation, and reevaluation of patient care.
- Maintains departmental equipment, documents malfunctions, and manages stock levels.
- Measures pulmonary function and other respiratory parameters using appropriate instrumentation, calibrates and maintains equipment.
- Assists with specialized procedures like bronchoscopies, sleep studies, and exercise testing with proper training.
- Maintains departmental documentation, including patient charts, therapy records, QA, and billing.
- Supports departmental quality assurance programs and audits.
IV. B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:
- Enhances professional growth through education, in-service meetings, and literature.
- Encouraged to participate in local and national respiratory therapy societies.
V. Reporting Requirements:
Respiratory therapists are responsible for reporting patient condition, therapies, goals, responses, adverse reactions, and hospital variances on a shift basis.
VI. Accountability:
Accountable for maintaining confidentiality, abiding by policies, accurately measuring pulmonary parameters, and knowing all aspects of critical care respiratory therapy and AARC CPG.
VII. Qualifications:
Minimum Experience: Will consider applicants with less than one year of respiratory therapy experience.
Minimum Skills/Abilities: Good interpersonal and communication skills to explain procedures to patients.
Certification/Licensure: RRT license in respiratory therapy from Massachusetts; BLS certification required; ALS certification preferred.
Training: Must obtain sufficient annual Continuing Education to maintain licensure.
