Job Summary / Purpose

This position contributes to the mission and vision of CHI St Joseph Health by providing direct respiratory care in all patient care areas including general floors, critical care, and emergency room. Assess need, evaluate effectiveness of therapy, and recommend changes in specific modes of therapy to the physician.

Responsibilities
  • Perform basic respiratory care and develop plans for the delivery of Respiratory Therapy as directed by physicians or protocols, and implement in a timely manner. Promote a positive quality work environment in the provision of quality patient care.
  • Administer and monitor critical care procedures such as mechanical ventilation, physiological monitoring, and diagnostic procedures, in accordance with established policies.
  • Assess patients to determine needs related to therapy modality, frequency, and duration based on physician orders, considering patient’s age, cognitive, and developmental needs. Communicate evaluation data to the physician and recommend therapy adjustments.
  • Make entries in the medical record within the scope of job duties and licensure. Observe patient responses to therapy, evaluate, and document in the medical record. Report adverse reactions immediately.
  • Provide instruction to patients, families, staff, and students about respiratory therapy procedures, equipment, and theory. Offer referrals and education for Home Care patients, using appropriate language and materials.
  • Assume charge responsibilities in the supervisor’s absence, including workload assignment based on staff competency.
  • Participate in quality assurance, provide educational support, coordinate continuing education, and serve as a resource for staff.
  • Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, assembly, and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Provide complete hand-off reports, maintain professionalism, and ensure confidentiality. Collaborate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including advanced diagnostic procedures if trained, such as Bronchoscopy, EEG, Evoked Potentials, and advanced pulmonary diagnostics.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience

Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy program.

Required Licensure and Certifications
  • RESP-LIC KY
  • RRT
  • BLS-CPR
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP within 3 months of hire
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

Strong knowledge of respiratory procedures, diagnostic testing, laws, regulations, and standards. Good communication, professionalism, teamwork, and respect for diversity are essential.
