Job summary

The University of Vermont Health Network seeks a Respiratory Therapist for our Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Clinic. In this on-site role, you will perform comprehensive PFTs, including spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion studies, to support accurate diagnosis and management of pulmonary conditions.

You’ll monitor patient responses, educate on respiratory therapies and self-management, and collaborate with pulmonologists, nurses, and allied health staff within an academic health system

Qualifications

• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
• Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (state licensure).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• ACLS preferred.
• PALS preferred.
• Experience with pulmonary function testing equipment.
• Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR).

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion, and related studies).
• Prepare, position, and monitor patients to ensure accurate, safe testing and high-quality data.
• Calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot PFT and respiratory care equipment per protocol.
• Interpret test quality, recognize abnormal results, and communicate findings to pulmonologists and providers.
• Obtain and process arterial blood gases as indicated, following safety and infection-control standards.
• Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, test procedures, and therapy adherence.
• Document assessments, procedures, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Collaborate with pulmonologists, nurses, and allied health staff in care planning and follow-up.
• Maintain clinic supplies, adhere to regulatory and infection-control standards, and support quality initiatives.
• Participate in ongoing education, competency validation, and quality improvement projects within the academic health system.
