Job summary

OrthoNebraska in Omaha is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with breathing difficulties across age groups, collaborating with physicians and nurses to restore natural breathing function.

Requirements include an AMA-approved respiratory care program with an associate degree, Nebraska LRCP license, NBRC CRT or RRT, and BLS/ACLS/PALS. At least 1 year of acute hospital or long-term care experience is preferred. On-call shifts are part of the schedule.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provides direct respiratory care and education to patients including aerosol therapy, IPPB, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, MDI, oxygen, oximetry, PFTs, ABG and EKG.
• Operates respiratory equipment and administers medications as ordered.
• Assesses, monitors, and documents patient responses to therapies.
• Demonstrates ability to provide care appropriate to age of patients served.
• Maintains infection control and safety compliance; participates in education for team members.

Position Summary

The Respiratory Therapist is trained and skilled to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who have difficulty breathing. They work with people of all ages in conjunction with providers and nurses to come up with treatment plans aimed at best helping restore as much natural breathing function as possible. Hours/Schedule

0 / As Needed, On-Call every third week 5p - 5a

Education

Graduate from an approved American Medical Association (AMA) approved respiratory care program with an associate degree required.

License/Certification

Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (LRCP) from the State of Nebraska required. Required: Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS).

Experience

1+ years of acute Hospital or Long-Term Care experience required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Strong analytical skills, critical thinking for quick decision making, and detail oriented while maintaining a calm bedside manner. Excellent patient assessment skills, detailed knowledge of lung physiology, ability to operate respiratory equipment and administer medications when ordered. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, support, and influence multidisciplinary teams.

Essential Job Functions

• Promotes positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, families, physicians, customers, and team members.
• Provides direct respiratory care and education to patients including, but not limited to aerosol therapy, IPPB, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, metered dose inhalers, oxygen, oximetry, PFT’s, ABG’s and EKG’s.
• Provides mechanical ventilatory support according to departmental policy and procedure.
• Administers pharmacologic agents according to departmental policy and procedure.
• Assess, monitor, evaluate, document and communicate patient’s response to therapies and medication.
• Completes and documents patient’s records.
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
• Infection Control and safety compliance.
• Participates in personal development and hospital continuing education programs.
• Provides in-service education (teaching, orienting, and guiding) to team members by sharing knowledge and mastered skills as needed.
• Works with Biomed regarding equipment maintenance.
• Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission.
• Participate in performance improvement activities.
• Attend mandatory educational programs and meetings as indicated.
• Employee is responsible for all other duties as assigned for which competency has been demonstrated.

Physical requirements

Work is done in an environmentally controlled hospital. Physical requirements include the ability to perform CPR, lifting up to 20lbs occasionally (34-65% of time) as involved with the transfer of patients and movements of equipment. Requires standing and walking frequently (66-100% of time). This position is classified as Light Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Requires working with multiple activities and dividing time and attention to variety of demands possibly in emergency situations.
